VIP Public Hearing on Proposed EPA Coal Ash Regulations Aug. 30 in Arlington
From Kate Pollard, Sierra Club’s Beyond Coal Virginia coordinator.
Coal Ash. It’s Toxic. It’s Everywhere. We Must Act Now.
Right now communities across Virginia, and throughout the country, are exposed to heavy metals such as arsenic, lead and mercury when hazardous materials from coal ash disposal sites seep into our drinking water. The result — increased risk of cancer, learning disabilities, birth defects and other illnesses. There are 16 sites in Virginia, alone – many of which have never been monitored. (Click here for our Virginia fact sheet for the list of sites – does not include additional “beneficial use” sites like the Battlefield Golf Course in Chesapeake, VA.)
Help protect our water by coming to the hearing and sharing your personal story, or just adding your voice to the call for strong regulations of this toxic substance.
