The Virginia Chapter Sierra Club offered the following statement in response to Virginia Beach City Council’s unanimous vote last night adopting the Mayor’s Alternative Energy Task Force report and calling for implementation of its recommendations.
“The Virginia Chapter Sierra Club applauds the hard work and dedication of the Mayor’s Alternative Energy Task Force and urges prompt implementation of its recommendations” said Director Glen Besa. “With its stand against the Surry coal plant, its continued opposition to uranium mining in Virginia and a more cautious approach to offshore drilling, Virginia Beach is providing real leadership on a path to a clean energy future for Virginia.”
“As outlined in the Task Force report, offshore wind fits in with the clean beaches and ocean waters essential to the Virginia Beach way of life,” said Eileen Levandoski, Sierra Club program manager and Virginia Beach resident. “Energy from dirty coal and oil makes no sense in our community from a health and environmental standpoint, while hamstringing our economic development. I look forward to assisting city staff and the newly formed energy advisory board in promptly implementing the Mayor’s Energy Task Force recommendations.”
