Statement of Sierra Club’s Virginia Chapter Director Glen Besa on eve of house vote to permit drilling off Virginia’s Coast:
“We simply can not drill our way to lower gas prices when we use 25% of the world’s oil and we only have 4% of the world’s oil reserves. Even if we drilled we’d still be sending a billion dollars a day to foreign countries several which are hostile to our interests and values.
The smartest thing we could do is to end the tax subsidies to the oil industry and redirect the money to alternatively fueled vehicles like electric cars and to public transit.
Politicians have awfully short memories. Just one year ago we were worrying about the gulf oil spill hitting our Virginia beaches. We dodged that disaster but the residents of the gulf still live with depressed tourism and a crippled fishery. Is that what we want for Virginia? I don’t think so.”
