Senators Webb and Warner’s Inexcusable Vote
The first ever effort by the US EPA to regulate mercury pollution from coal fired power plants survived a challenge this past week in the US Senate.
Mercury is a potent neurotoxin that can diminish the intellectual capacity of children still in their mother’s womb if the mom has excessive levels of mercury in her blood. More than one in twelve women have excessive levels of mercury primarily from eating fish contaminated with this poison. The primary source of mercury in our fish and in our bodies is coal fired power plants.
Regretably, Senators Mark Warner and Jim Webb voted with Big Coal and against the well being of children. And now the Republican Pary is applauding Warner for this vote against President Obama’s EPA action to reign in mercury.
We need you to send a message to Mark Warner and Jim Webb that children’s health counts more that utilities looking to burn coal without the expense of removing the mercury. Their votes against the US EPA and in favor of Big Coal are inexcusable and we need you to tell them so.
