On Monday, Senator John Watkins announced that he will introduce a bill on behalf of the uranium industry to repeal a 30 year ban on uranium mining in Virginia. This despite the fact that all the numerous studies conducted have found that uranium mining in a wet state like Virginia poses unacceptable risks to water contamination. That is why the Mayors of two of Virginia’s major cities, Norfolk and Virginia Beach, are opposed. An accident at the proposed mine in Pittsylvania County could contaminate the drinking water of over 1 million Virginians.
But Senator Watkins has stated that the property rights of the owner of the property where the uranium ore is found trump the rights of everyone else. This is not acceptable. More details on uranium mining can be found at www.keeptheban.org.
