Stop seismic airgun blasting for oil and gas off our coast

Constantly combing hundreds of acres of ocean, air gun blasts just three miles from the mouth of the Chesapeake Bay, WILL have a devastating impact on fish and marine life. Even the Department of Interior itself reports that Atlantic seismic airgun testing for oil and gas will injure or kill 138,500 dolphins and whales. It will have an impact on the North Atlantic Right Whale, only about 400 of which are left in the world and it will depress commercial fish catches.

Seismic airguns and offshore drilling threaten commercial and recreational fisheries as well as ocean-based tourism and coastal recreation. Almost 110,000 jobs* in Virginia’s tourism, recreation and fishing industries depend on a healthy ocean and Chesapeake Bay, and clean beaches.

Our coastal environment is too precious to risk with ANY drilling-related activity. While the Gulf and its people are today still reeling from the BP gulf oil spill disaster, other spills have since occurred off the coast of Scotland in the North Sea and off the Brazilian coast. The risk continues to be real and formidable. Why even kick off the process with exploration?

Click here to sign a special WhiteHouse.gov petition urging President Obama to stop proposed seismic testing in the Atlantic. And spread the word! If we can get 100,000 signatures on it by May 15, we are guaranteed a response from the President.

And please join Sierra Club, Surfrider Foundation, Chesapeake Climate Action Network and Oceana for our 4th annual Hands Across the Sand Saturday May 18, 2013 in Virginia Beach. Help us draw a line in the sand against offshore oil drilling and championing instead clean energy, like offshore wind, for a sustainable planet. Wind mills not oil spills! Click here to RSVP today!
