Protect 138,000 Marine Animals from Seismic Air Guns. Comment by May 7!

Why explore when we don't want drilling in the first place?

UPDATE: We are in the final hours to get public comments into the Feds. Click here to send a message to BOEM telling them to halt plans for Atlantic seismic airgun blasting now! The deadline is TOMORROW – May 7, 2014!

Protect 138,000 Marine Animals from Seismic Air Gun Blasting with 138,000 Public Comments.

Coming down to the wire to speak out against Atlantic seismic air gun blasting – deadline is tomorrow May 7. Our Care2 petition has almost 29,000 signatures and our SierraRise petition has almost 108,000. Together, that’s almost the same # of public comments as there are estimated marine mammals to be injured or killed by this awful blasting. Let’s stand up to protect all those marine mammals and match BOEM’s shameful 138,000 estimate with 138,000 public comments. We just need about 1,000 more signatures to do so!

In response to the Bureau of Ocean Energy Management’s release of its final Programmatic Environmental Impact Statement for seismic studies in the Atlantic, Sierra Club Virginia Chapter Director Glen Besa issued the following statement:

“Seismic air gun blasting, by the Federal government’s own estimates, will injure and kill more than 138,000 marine mammals. It puts the camel’s nose under Big Oil’s tent in support of drilling for crude oil and gas off our Atlantic coast. These drilling activities are not only known to kill, injure and maim, but they present tremendous risks to our sensitive coastal environment and our lucrative coastal economy. Doubly disastrous is the fact that these pursuits of dirty fossil fuels occur in areas most impacted by climate change. If we stand any chance of thwarting our present collision course with increasing severe storms, rising sea levels, and ocean acidification, we must abandon plans to pull from the ground any more dirty fuel.”

“Especially along the Atlantic, any investment in offshore drilling –including seismic studies – is foolish. The East Coast is blessed with outstanding offshore wind resources as evidenced by wind development projects up and down the coast, including off the coast of Virginia. These resources employ far more workers, don’t exacerbate climate change, and don’t threaten our clean beaches and healthy ocean waters. That’s where our investment should be fully focused.”
