Don’t Tax the Sun!Dominion Virginia Power, AEP and Virginia’s electric coops are so concerned about competition from solar power that they want to impose a charge on their customers who have solar panels on their homes. We call that a “Tax on the Sun.”
They can’t do that, you say? Consider this…
Last year, utilities in sunny Arizona aggressively pushed a law that would have imposed a $100/month charge on their customers with solar panels. Sierra Club joined forces with the solar industry in an epic battle against this “tax on the sun” and when the dust settled, the Arizona legislature approved a $5/month charge instead of the $100/month the utilities had sought.
In Virginia, Dominion already has a $50/month “sun tax” on their customers with larger solar systems (10 KWs or more), and AEP is seeking a similar tax on their customers with large systems right now before the State Corporation Commission.
Worse yet, Dominion and AEP are making noises that they may seek legislation like the utilities in Arizona to impose a significant charge on all their customers with solar panels. As crazy as this sounds, remember Dominion usually gets what it wants from the Virginia General Assembly.
We can’t let that happen, and with your financial support we won’t. Your generous contribution will let us take our “don’t tax the sun” campaign to the people and let us generate the grassroots pressure that Sierra Club is famous for.
